4 maggio 2023 - Mixed Long-distance dependencies across finite clauses: Evidence from indirect evidentiality in Romanian. Seminario

Giovedì 4 maggio 2023 alle ore 15.30 presso la Sala Riunioni (II piano di Palazzo Dossetti) si terrà il seminario dal titolo

Mixed Long-distance dependencies across finite clauses:
Evidence from indirect evidentiality in Romanian

Relatrice Gabriela Alboiu, Professoressa Associata, York University (Toronto, Canada)

Romanian displays a construction in which the subject of an embedded indicative clause surfaces with Accusative Case in the matrix clause under specific evidential interpretations. This resembles cross-linguistic constructions known as "Raising to Object" but the Romanian construction under discussion shows distinct properties and occurs exclusively with matrix verbs of knowledge and perception. In addition, Case (either Nominative or Dative) is already available to the embedded subject and, unexpectedly, passivization and bare quantifiers are ruled out. The talk shows: (i) that the embedded subject moves across the fully articulated finite CP complement into the matrix predicate domain; (ii) that the trigger for movement is interpretive rather than Case related and results from a shift in evidentiality: from indirect (hearsay), no source, to indirect with specified source; and (iii) that such derivations show mixed properties of long-distance dependencies.

Il seminario si svolgerà interamente in lingua inglese.

La partecipazione è libera.
